Your LES is your enrollment statement. This is a pay slip or military pay slip. It tells you how much money you earned during the pay period. Amount of tax withheld, your leave balance and much more. This is essentially a detailed report of your salary and benefits. It is usually announced a few days before each payday to update you about your current vacation days and earnings for the pay period. Checking your LES is an important part of managing your monthly finances.
There are 78 areas in the LES, yes you read that right, there are 78 blocks in the LES for you to know and understand. You don't have to remember them all. But you should familiarize yourself with your LES to recognize when there are problems. Your LES area is divided into 11 main sections:

4. Pay Date: Your Active Duty Date (also known as Pay Entry Base Date) in YYMMDD format.

12. Allocations: This is a list of all allocations deducted, such as transfers to your savings or your rent payments. It also lists allocations that are not in your discretion, such as child support.

23. DIEMS (Military Service Commencement Date): Your DIEMS is used only to determine which retirement plan you are subject to. The date is from your personnel directive, not DFAS.

26. ERND: You get 2.5 days leave every month. This field is the total number of holidays you have received for the year.
28. CR BAL: Most service members and their spouses closely monitor this number. This is your current leave balance as at the end of the pay period for the Leave and Earnings Statement.
32. Use/Lose: Also known as "take it or lose it." This is the estimated amount of leave you would lose if you did not use it in the current financial year.
34. YTD Wages: Your gross earnings for the year to date subject to federal tax withholding. Payments such as Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) which are not subject to tax are not included in this figure.
