F4 Phantom Aircraft - First adopted by the Navy in 1960, the F4 Phantom is perhaps the longest-running fighter jet in US history, having been in US military service for more than 40 years. No longer a major US military base, the aircraft was part of dozens of foreign air forces, and still lives on as a base in many countries, including Iran, Turkey and Greece. In four decades of active US service, the aircraft set 16 world performance records. Defeated more opponents in the Vietnam War than any other US fighter (280 victories). Two decades later, he flew combat missions in Desert Storm.

Is it called Phantom? ?Double ugly, ? ?Rhino, ? ?old style, ? And other options are less disappointing. The design has its share of curves and angles. The horizontal stabilizer drops 23.25 degrees. These problems with the early model were real and were revealed on May 18, 1961 in a quick registration attempt. Naval Test Pilot Commander J.L. Felsman was flying 125 feet down the three-mile runway when his F-4 damper failed. As a result, the pilot's shaking was more than 12 Gs. Both engines were cut off and Felsman was killed.

The F4 has none of the bells and whistles of the next generation fighters. Instead of the multifunction flight displays found on modern fighters, the cockpit instruments are classic analog-style, needle-shaped dials. It has a thermal inertial navigation system. No flight management system, no GPS, no electronic flight instrument system (EFIS), and no ?Bitching Betty? Sound system to alert the pilot. You have to manage each of those activities with the device, bomb, shoot missiles, shoot guns, solve problems and evaluate. For the pilot, this means spending a lot of time on his own to analyze the instrument data. A standard HUD is simply nowhere to be found on modern jet aircraft.

Since 1991, Phantoms 254 have served as unmanned aerial targets for missile and artillery tests conducted near Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. When an airframe is needed for target missions, one is pulled from storage at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in the Arizona desert. The aircraft will be given an upgraded engine and equipment and then flown to Mojave Airfield in California. There, engineers convert the aircraft into a remote-controlled drone, installing radio antennas and replacing flight controls, beams, landing gear and props.

In their quest to keep these 60-year-old jets flying, many air forces have come to us to rebuild replacement parts for outdated systems on these tough old planes. Although it has special redesigned systems, you can be sure that this jet today flies better than its grandfather in every way.

The U.S. military bid a final farewell to the mighty McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II on Dec. 21, 2016, as the last active examples took off in a ceremony and brief flight display under cloudy skies at the Air Force Base. Holloman retired near Alamogordo. New Mexico. The Phantom II was officially retired from use by US forward squadrons in 1996, and more than 300 examples have been converted to QF-4 unmanned aircraft over the past 30 years. These aircraft performed an essential service in testing the effectiveness of munitions in realistic situations as well as training fighter pilots in the art of air combat against live targets. The final QF-4 conversion, formerly RF-4C 68-0599, rolled off the assembly line at AMARG in Tucson, Arizona in April 2013. The QF-16 takes over where the QF-4 left off.

Yesterday's small retirement ceremony for the QF-4s of the 82nd Air Target Squadron at Holloman was not scheduled to be open to the public, but with such enthusiastic interest in the Phantom II, the military backed off and allowed civil participation. Many dignitaries from the Fantom community were on hand for the event, including the last active duty F-4 pilot of the US Air Force, Col. Including Ron "Elvis" King. Six Phantom IIs, along with a pair of QF-16s, sat on the runway early in the morning, with their fuselages open. The four Phantoms took to the skies and attacked the field individually and then landed a fighter jet, before forming a "finale" of four ships. As the retired fighters slowly drove away, their towbars still spinning, they received a traditional wildfire salute from local emergency vehicles. After the shutdown, maintenance workers, pilots and former members of the Phantom community decorated one of the gray QF-4s with their signature. Hopefully this plane will find a home somewhere in a museum with the other planes.

With the end of the QF-4 program, only the Collings Foundations F-4D is airworthy in the United States, and a hundred or so aviation examples remain outside the United States with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, Turkish Air Force, Hellenic Air Force. . The air force, the air force of the Republic of Korea and of course the air force of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Most of these are due to retire soon.
