Designed to meet the Soviet Ministry of Defense's requirements for a fast bomber to counter the NATO threat, the Tupolev Tu-16 (NATO reporting name: Badger) was a formidable task. It was the first intercontinental ballistic missile of the Soviet Union and was built around turbojet engines, which were the most powerful engines in the world at the time. First flown in 1952, the Tu-16 performed roles such as nuclear bomb delivery, missile strikes, reconnaissance and electronic testing. It also served as the basis for the first Soviet aircraft, the Tu-104. About 1,500 were built for the Soviet Air Force and Soviet Navy, and the Tu-16 proved to have a long service life, the last examples being retired in 1993.

As described by Yefim Gordon, Dmitry Komisarov and Vladimir Rigmant in their book Tupolev Tu-16: Universal Bomber of the Cold War, the Tu-16 was always present on May Day and November 7 on Red Square, as well as Aviation. It should be noted here that on January 26, 1918, three months after the revolution, Soviet Russia switched from the old Julian calendar and began using the old Julian calendar. Before the 1956 May Day parade, a large formation of Tu-16s - 75 bombers from the 121st, 171st and 203rd TBAPs - performed daily at Chkalovskaya AB east of Moscow. First the bombers were lined up on the runway and had markings painted on them to help the pilots remember the correct place in the formation. Daily training flights began to ensure that the stations were in good condition and weather conditions. The landing of this armada was a problem in itself; the trips had to be reduced to 20 seconds because the last bomber always had to wait for hours! At one point this almost hit the ground when the bomber in front of it had engine trouble and stopped on the way.

The flights were recorded on film from the ground and the films used for interviews. From time to time, DA Air Marshal Vladimir A. Soodets attended the meeting; he was known for his anger and knew how to punish quickly. When Soodets saw that there was something wrong with the discussion, he ordered the "film" to be stopped and said: "The plane written by so-and-so! Who is the captain of the plane?” The frightened Major stood up and revealed himself. Then he hears the full voice: "Why aren't you [expletive] in line?" "I'm in trouble Comrade Marshal," the criminal stammered. "If the captain can't make a formation, then the captain can [delete expletive]!" said the commander, and the "video" continued.

May Day arrived, and the bombers, led by the commander of the 45th TBAD, Colonel Vitaly Gordilovsky, took off and began a circuitous route to Moscow, taking a hard road before making the last turn to Leningradsky Prospekt Boulevard, then on Gore'kiy Street and to Red Square. Suddenly the team, flying at an altitude of 300 m (990 ft), hit dark clouds that should not have been there at all - the weather forecast plane 90 minutes earlier had shown a clear sky. Without receiving instructions from the commander or the ground, the pilots did what they could and moved the bombs aside to avoid hitting the clouds. By the time he broke from the clouds at 3,000 m (9,840 ft), the beautiful solid structure had gone to the dogs and there was no time to restore it. Someone radioed clearly and told the pilots to abort the mission and return to base, the mood was bad but they all landed safely. On Chkalovskaya, workers expected great success and inevitable results. Finally, one of the deputy chiefs of the public prosecutor's office arrived, who was smart and businesslike. He invited the pilots to enter the problems of the officials, as they laid the tables for the ceremony. "Okay, pilots," said the officer, taking a glass of vodka, "what are we going to celebrate?" May Day or your birthday? "Of course, everyone said, 'Happy Birthday, Comrade General!'" The General gushed and continued, "Happy Birthday! Everyone got out alive – so you did the right thing!” Ironically, the fighters who arrived near Red Square in front of the bombers followed a different route, departing from Kubinka AV in the west of Moscow; he avoided strange clouds, passing without hindrance.
